Turmeric Smoothie for Metabolism Support

Turmeric is popular for helping to ease inflammation, boosting brain power, helping to clean the liver, and giving the heart a helping hand.

But not too many people know about its potential to support weight loss.

There is little research about turmeric and weight loss, but researchers are piecing together how it may be beneficial.

What is Turmeric?

Turmeric is native to India and southern Asia. It can grow up to 6 feet in height and produces an underground root-like structure known as a rhizome that contains compounds like curcumin, an antioxidant that gives the turmeric rhizome its distinct orange color and helps to make the body more healthy.

Turmeric can be found in supplements or as a powder. You local grocery stores may sell the powder in the spice aisle and may even offer the whole root so you can slice it for cooking or grind it into a homemade powder.

There are many other ways to enjoy the potential benefits of turmeric. These include making curry, which turmeric is a main ingredient, or using turmeric to help support your healthy-looking hair.

How Turmeric Aids Weight Loss

Researchers suggest that people looking to lose weight will benefit the most from turmeric if their health problems are related to inflammation. This is because inflammation affects metabolism by disrupting the normal function of bodily systems.

Turmeric may also help to tell the body how to store fat. There are two types of adipose tissue (fat) in the body: brown and white.

The white form of adipose tissue stores energy. Brown adipose tissue generates body heat.

White adipose tissue is what many people struggle to lose because the body doesn’t want to shrink its energy storage.

Curcumin may help the body burn more fat, as one study found that curcumin signals to the body to produce more brown adipose tissue, resulting in less white adipose tissue and a decrease in body weight and fat mass.

We already mentioned turmeric supplements and using the spice on foods, so we found a smoothie recipe that will help to boost the effects of turmeric and jump start your metabolism.

While you should consult a primary care physician prior to giving a child a supplement, adding it to their food may be potentially beneficial provided they aren't allergic or their gut doesn't reject it which is a known side effect for people of all ages.
